CSIL is contributing to PHIRE, a Horizon Europe project designed to strengthen Europe’s technology infrastructure ecosystem for photonics-enabled healthcare innovation.
Photonics offers significant opportunities to improve healthcare technologies and services, but companies—particularly SMEs—often face barriers in accessing the advanced facilities, expertise and support required to develop, validate and bring new solutions to market. PHIRE addresses these challenges by developing a concept for a resilient, scalable and pan-European technology infrastructure for photonics in health.
The project combines access to technological capabilities with regulatory guidance, skills development and market-readiness support. It will also test new service models and develop an adaptable multi-stakeholder governance framework to support the ecosystem’s long-term sustainability and evolving technological and user needs. This work will generate broader lessons for strengthening innovation capacity and technology infrastructures across other key enabling technologies.
CSIL leads the mapping and comparative analysis of Europe’s technology infrastructure landscape, drawing on its experience in assessing complex innovation ecosystems, infrastructure and market needs, governance arrangements and research and innovation policies. The analysis examines:
CSIL combines desk research and structured data collection with web-based data gathering, statistical analysis, stakeholder consultations, surveys and co-creation activities. By integrating quantitative and qualitative evidence from across Europe, CSIL will contribute to strategic roadmaps, governance models and practical recommendations for future investment, policy development and the long-term sustainability of the technology infrastructure ecosystem.
