Socio-economic Impact Assessments of CERN Activities

CSIL, in collaboration with Technopolis Group, is conducting a study to evaluate the socio-economic impacts of CERN’s activities over the past 20 years. The main objectives are to produce a coherent picture of CERN’s socio-economic impacts and to provide advice for follow-up impact tracking and evaluation activities that might usefully be undertaken in future. The study encompasses seven key impact areas: research, innovation, skills, science diplomacy, public awareness and outreach, societal impacts, and local economic development. CSIL will carry out the analysis of CERN scientific publications, the analysis of the impact of procurement and knowledge transfer initiatives and a case study on hadrontherapy. The project aims to deliver an integrated impact framework and blueprint for future tracking and strategic planning, supporting CERN in evidencing its wider societal contributions and informing policymaking.
