The 12th European Week of Regions and Cities (OPEN DAYS) has taken place in Brussels on 6-9 October 2014, by including a programme of 108 workshops. CSIL was invited to join the workshop on “a place-based approach for areas far away from basic services”, jointly organised by the Commission and the Italian presidency of the Council. During the workshop, the ambitious Italian Inner Areas strategy was explained, giving a national perspective on how place-based solutions can help. Then, the work done by the Commission on scenarios for Integrated Territorial Investments was presented, more specifically a scenario for urban rural linkages that show how ESI funds now can be used together. In addition, several examples of place-based approaches in the 2007-2014 period were discussed and finally on-the-ground experience with working on Roma integration was shared.

Silvia Vignetti  from CSIL presented evidence collected within the framework of a recent study on ‘Territorial Agenda 2020 put in practice – enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of Cohesion Policy by a place-based approach’, carried out by CSIL experts on behalf of the European Commission, Directorate Regional and Urban Policy, Inclusive Growth, Urban and Territorial Development and Northern Europe. Results of the study show  a number of effective interventions realised in the past programming periods at different territorial levels and in a wide range of sectors and thematic areas which succeeded, often unconsciously, to put in practice the principles of place based approached.
