On 21 November 2008 the Palazzo delle Stelline Conference Centre in Milan hosted CSIL's traditional end of year Forecast Seminar, intended for entrepreneurs and trade operators in the furniture-furnishings system and related sectors, as well as representatives of institutions and the press.
This appointment organised by CSIL is now in its twenty-sixth edition and again this year presented figures and forecasts for consumption, production, exports, imports and prices in the furniture sector in Italy and 60 countries worldwide that are active on the global market as major furniture manufacturing, exporting and consuming countries and which are constantly monitored by CSIL.
A key issue at this year's edition of the seminar was the United States. Significant direct testimonials from sector operators were presented that explain the productive strategies, the distribution scenarios and the performance of consumption in this difficult moment for the US and world economies.
The US market is made up of 300 million people with a per capita income of roughly US$ 30,000. It is, thus, the largest market in the world for the furniture sector and it has a strong propensity to import. The economic crisis currently affecting the United States has therefore had considerable effects on the performance of world trade in furniture and on a number of countries' national production. For the first time in many years furniture imports into the United States are decreasing and it isn't only the Italian firms that are suffering from this situation; also those from China, which is the leading supplier of furniture to the American market, are beginning to feel the effects of the negative trend in demand in the United States.
